Secondary Education in Germany

Germany offers international students a secondary education system that combines academic rigour with a practical focus. State schools are free for children who permanently reside in Germany; for international students who come specifically to study, access is limited, and families more often choose private boarding schools. After completing school, graduates receive the Abitur, which is recognised by universities in Germany and most European countries. No additional exams are required for admission to German universities; however, other countries may have their own admission requirements, including language exams or subject-specific requirements.

The system is divided into several school types: academic Gymnasien prepare students for university, Realschulen focus on vocational education, and comprehensive schools allow students to switch paths as they grow older. This approach gives families flexibility and allows children to develop at their own pace.

For international students, the key admission requirement is usually a B2 level of German, since most programmes are taught in German. Specific requirements depend on the federal state, type of school, and programme: some international schools accept students with B1 and offer language support. Boarding schools that accept international students usually provide additional language support and help them adapt, while living on campus from the first year speeds up integration and eases everyday burdens for the family.
